The Digital Geography Lab is an interdisciplinary research group in the Faculty of Science focused on human-scale spatial big data analysis to support planning for a just and sustainable society. Most of the lab’s research uses people’s mobility and accessibility as tools for understanding interactions between people and people and their environments. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will benefit from a stimulating research environment at the university, the Faculty of Science, the Department of Geoscience and Geography, and the Institute that emphasizes scientific rigor, creative and critical thinking, and mutual support and respect. I can do it.
GREENTRAVEL (Greener Travel Environments for Everyone – From Measured Happiness Impact to Big Data Analytics) is an ERC-funded project that will operate within the Digital Geography Lab for 5 years from 2023. A project team of five researchers aims to generate further knowledge about the link between a green travel environment and well-being. In addition, they examine how urban people can equitably access good travel environments during their daily trips. The project applies a variety of advanced techniques, including spatial big data analysis, virtual reality experiments, and computer vision, to generate knowledge that improves the quality and sustainability of urban environments for all. Work will take place in several cities. It started in the Helsinki area and has since expanded to several other European cities, including London and Berlin.
Faculty of Science
Postdoctoral Researcher in Designing Virtual Reality Environments for Green Travel Experiments From February 2023 or by agreement, a two-year fixed-term employment contract will start.
position description
The postdoctoral researcher focuses on designing realistic virtual reality (VR) environments with different green features and seasons to be used for controlled experiments of green exposure during travel. These experiments are a group effort in the GREENTRAVEL project team, where postdoctoral researchers developed realistic VR environments containing varying levels of urban greenery and other natural elements, and used them in controlled scientific experiments. It plays an important role in studying its usefulness. Postdoctoral researchers participate in real-world experiments in different research cities. Postdoctoral researchers may also contribute to other parts of the project, depending on their expertise and interests. For example, a computer with her vision skills can participate in creating a human-perspective index of urban green spaces for use in broader spatial analysis. Overall, postdoctoral researchers are welcome to participate in all aspects of the lab’s activities and are able to teach and supervise students in the Master of Geography programme.
Requirements and eligibility criteria
We are looking for postdoctoral researchers with advanced technical skills and scientific curiosity. Postdoctoral researchers are expected to have the ability to collaborate on independent scientific research and technology development in an interdisciplinary research environment.of
Postdoctoral researchers should have a PhD in computer science or engineering or a related field. We are looking for advanced and proven expertise in designing realistic and tunable virtual reality environments, such as using game engines. Preference will be given to those with experience in scientific experiments using a VR environment. In addition, we emphasize expertise in other methods related to the GREENTRAVEL project, such as statistics, computer vision, spatial big data mining, and spatial modeling. We value good scientific and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to efficiently produce scientific texts. Language skills in the project language (English, Finnish, German, Spanish) are considered an advantage.
A candidate’s PhD must have been granted by the awarding institution by the date of the recruitment interview. The doctoral degree is scheduled to be completed within 5 years (after 2017) before the application. The five-year limit may be exceeded for particularly compelling reasons (such as parental leave or military service) and is subject to negotiation.
The University of Helsinki welcomes applicants of different genders, linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
salary and benefits
Starting salaries for postdoctoral researchers are approximately $100. €3600-3800 per month, depending on the qualifications and experience of the appointee. In addition, the University of Helsinki offers a comprehensive range of services to its employees, including occupational health care, sports facilities and professional development opportunities.
