1. When several high-profile NFL broadcasters signed monster deals last offseason (inspired by Tony Romo’s acquisition of an additional monster deal in 2020), the debate about the importance and value of game announcers began. rice field.
CBS’s Greg Gumbel made headlines when he appeared on a TV show with me in March. SI Media Podcast “What tickles my thought process is that never in my life did it feel like there was an announcer on TV to bring a game that the viewer wasn’t ready to see. I think the only thing you can do is drive people away.”
Gumbel later added: [Michaels] and Chris [Collinsworth] Well done Sunday night.’ Yeah, they always do a great job. But they played their best game of the week.”
Well, Al teamed up with Kirk Herbstreit to have the best game of the week for sure on Thursday night when the Colts and Broncos failed to find the end zone and gave them a 12-9 snoozefest. It wasn’t. And Al shone.
Part of the reason Al can do these things in a situation like this is because he’s Al Michaels. He’s been around forever, and Amazon desperately wanted him in the hopes of boosting the credibility of its television broadcasts.
When Al got frustrated with the lack of action late in the second quarter and dropped this amazing line, it was still a bit surreal and absolutely brilliant.
Quick sidebar here. CBS’s Andrew Catalon, who frequently calls his fifth regional fight on CBS, acknowledged Mr. Al’s line.
Al didn’t stop there either. He continued to snark throughout the game.
NFL telecasts are not the place to go for honest reviews. That’s what made Al’s performance so great. He didn’t try to tell viewers that this was a tough, defensive football fight.
It kept me in tune with the game. If Al didn’t enjoy the grossness of the game and thought he would play straight, he would have put the game on his iPad in silence and watched something else on his TV.
But the commentary was interesting and I couldn’t take my eyes off it.
Michaels earned every penny in his lucrative Amazon deal Thursday night.
He’ll get it again next week when the Commanders take on the Bears and there’s a Carson Wentz vs. Justin Fields matchup.
2. One last thing about Al Michaels (this is so good I had to move it to another item).Al was on board SI Media Podcast Several times, including last month…
… I have Al’s phone number. I have never texted Michaels in-game. But last night the game was so bad I couldn’t stand it. So at halftime, I sent this short message to Michaels.
If you follow me on Twitter or are a regular reader of Traina Thoughts, then Howard Stern/OJ Simpson/Al Michaels/Peter Jennings’ prank call is one of the greatest moments in live television history. I know what I think
Michaels didn’t respond to my texts during the game, but this happened.
3. Al Michaels wasn’t the only one enjoying himself at the expense of the Colts and Broncos. Twitter mocked the teams’ incompetence and our pain as viewers.
