Great 8 is aiming for 800.

Alex Ovechkin, known as ‘The Great Eight’ after Wayne Gretzky’s ‘The Great One’, will become only the third player in NHL history to reach 800 goals. He entered the 2022-2023 season with 780 goals in 17 seasons. With each score he’s scored this season, he’s one step closer to joining Gretzky (894) and Gordy his Howe (801) at hockey’s most exclusive club.

With every goal the 37-year-old Ovechkin scores, he comes closer to Gretzky’s record of 894 goals, once believed to be unbreakable.

Ovechkin, who has spent his entire career with the Washington Capitals, will soon break Howe’s record for most points with a team. Howe scored 786 goals for the Detroit Reds in his 25th season with the Wings, then another 15 with the Hartford Whalers.

As Ovechkin makes history, let’s take a look at his respective goals this season…

The Great 8 will need 114 goals to break the Great One record, which has stood since 1999.

Gretzky passed Howe for his 802nd career goal in his 15th season in 1994 and finished his career with 894 goals in 1999.

If Ovechkin stays healthy and continues to score at his normal pace, he could probably surpass Gretzky by the end of the 2023-2024 season.
