During Sunday night rehearsals, my mom sent me an update about the Kansas City Chiefs game she was watching and how exciting it was. Once her rehearsal was over, he texted her to tell her that he didn’t reply to her right away because he was in rehearsal. She replied, “…that’s a bit of a shift, isn’t it?”
She was referring to the fact that I had just finished rehearsing for this year’s The Rocky Horror Show, but two nights before that, the Trident Theater was hosting the Full Moon Fort event at Fort Phil Kearny. Led a storytelling tour. Quite a shift indeed.
This year’s Full Moon Fort Tour told the story of the Battle of Fetterman with a poignant depiction of life on the post-Civil War frontier and a frozen, mutilated corpse. was aimed at a more general audience (although for families, the first tour of the evening will be scaled down for children’s enjoyment). So jumping from in-depth theatrical retellings of history to niche cult classics with strong sexual themes told in a hilarious and ambitious format… perhaps my mother would have loved me if I had whiplash. I was surprised that there weren’t any.
When she said that, I didn’t think much of it other than counting my lucky stars. But as soon as she said that, the gears of introspection began to turn. On the one hand, being the head of a theater production company allows Sovereignty to choose interesting projects to pursue. On the other hand, it is difficult to turn down a job.
But on second thought, I think it’s absolutely sensible for an artist to have a wide variety in their work. It must have been quite a shock for photographers to move from film to digital and actually no longer need a darkroom. Still, some photographers prefer film to digital, and again, I find it fascinating to have such diversity within a single art form.
We also understand that not all shows please all viewers. Try to name a play that meets all your needs. Discuss any play with anyone. even if it’s my favourite. I know I’ve been guilty of thinking, “Why do you like that stuff?” But still it is. I believe that speaks to the variety of flavors out there. There is something for everyone.
Overall, though, I appreciate the fact that since its inception, Trident has evolved into something that can offer not only a wide variety of plays and productions, but also delivery methods to entertain audiences.
We would like to thank everyone who participated in Full Moon Fort for their special patronage. And if you think it might be for you, I encourage you to give The Rocky Horror Picture Show a try. has many lofty reasons. But you can just come, unleash your inhibitions for a night and have some crazy fun. October 29th at 7pm at WYO Performing Arts and A one-night-only performance at the Education Center.
Oh, and by the way, the Chiefs ended up winning that game. I personally don’t enjoy soccer much, but I’m happy that my mom counts on it every week.
