September is Hunger Action Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness of hunger in America and finding solutions within our communities. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2021 more than 33 million of her people were living in food-insecure households in the United States.

For many people, a local food bank provides a lifeline to a family in need, but if you have cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, or other needs that are tailored to your specific nutritional needs, What if you have a medical condition, such as a serious illness in

So a local non-profit that adjusts diets to meet this need steps in.

FedEx is proud to support these community programs that address food insecurity among often-overlooked populations through a combination of charitable grants and the volunteer work of our team members.

Project Angel Heart (Colorado Springs)

The purpose of Project Angel Heart is to provide comfort and support through high-quality nutritional services, including medically regulated meals, while advocating the principle that food is medicine. Everyone should be able to get the nutrition they need, regardless of their background or situation. Especially when it comes to illness.

Each week in the kitchen, Project Angel Heart works with registered dietitians to create meals from scratch that are tailored to meet the specific dietary needs of people with serious illnesses such as cancer, heart failure and HIV/AIDS.

Meals are delivered directly to customers’ homes free of charge, removing barriers to access to nutritious food due to financial, mobility and accessibility issues. Clients report that a medically adjusted diet improves their health by addressing the financial pressures of serious illness, giving them time to rest and recuperate, and enabling them to live independently at home. Henry W Grady Health System Foundation Inc. (Atlanta)

There is an important relationship between health and nutrition. At Grady Health System, many patients suffer from chronic diet-related illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A healthy diet is essential for disease control and prevention, but too many families in the Atlanta community do not have access to fresh, healthy food.

Recognizing that need, Grady Health System, Atlanta Community Food Bank and Open Hand Atlanta have partnered to connect communities with fresh, healthy food through the innovative Jesse Hill Market. The market opened for the first time in August 2020 and serves as the home of Grady’s Food as Medicine program. Grady aims to increase access to healthy, affordable food for patients, employees and communities.

Patients with diabetes or hypertension who screen positive for food insecurity and who are referred by their primary care physician are eligible to enroll and can drop in at the food pharmacy on the same day. Program benefits include fresh food boxes every two weeks, nutrition education from a registered dietitian, and cooking classes in a teaching kitchen. Each food prescription is valid for him three months and the patient can renew her benefits for up to one year.
