Even before she officially became a Tar Heel, the Carolina Women in Business Student Organization at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School played a key role in Darby Casey’s experience as an MBA student.
As a young professional working in the energy industry, Casey attended conferences hosted by the group and quickly connected with alumni and found mentors that inspired her on her path to UNC Kenan-Flagler. One of her graduates offered to be Casey’s mentor through the application process.
“I wouldn’t be here without that connection,” said Darby, a current MBA sophomore at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
Darby, now president of Carolina Women in Business, wants to provide Tar Heels with more of these connections and support. This group is aimed at her MBA students at UNC Kenan-Flagler and provides professional and personal development opportunities for women and their peers who are preparing to become leaders in the business world. Business schools also have similar groups for undergraduates.

What are the goals of Carolina Women in Business?
Carolina Women in Business is UNC’s largest MBA club, and its primary goal is to increase the representation of women in UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and beyond. It does so through her four main components: providing opportunities for career and personal growth, inspiring male allies, facilitating networking opportunities, and connecting with alumni.
These four goals will be achieved in a variety of ways throughout the year. His two popular methods of achieving these goals are panels and workshops specifically for women. For example, this year we will have an event for women in the energy industry. We also plan to do it for women in the financial industry. Another way we support our mission is by growing our community here in Carolina. We provide social opportunities that give students the ability to connect with new people throughout the MBA program.
Why are the goals of this group important to students?
Carolina Women in Business is important because it supports UNC Kenan-Flagler women throughout their MBA journey. We have come a long way in terms of our business practices over the years to better support women. It is also important because our group not only supports its members and allies through personal and professional development, but it also shapes these individuals, which influences her UNC Kenan-Flagler community. and have an impact on companies.
It’s easy to feel isolated during the MBA process when you’re so focused on your career path. Having a women’s organization like Carolina Women in Business helps us better support each other and find the resources we need to make effective change within our organizations and systems. It’s so important to come together as a community to build each other up, and Carolina Women in Business gives women and allies the opportunity to do just that.
What’s your favorite part of Carolina Women in Business?
The social aspect is my favourite. There are programs like Lean In Circle. This is a small group that allows you to meet other people you have never met. Carolina Women in Business gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from people outside of my career interests.
In the fall, Carolina Women in Business will host its 17th annual conference. Why does the group host it every year?
The main purpose is to connect women. It was a great opportunity for prospective students to connect with each other, especially when we met in person. It is also an opportunity for current students to meet with sponsors. The event has over 400 attendees of hers and after COVID, we are looking to return to it this year. Last year it was more hybrid, but this year we will meet in person. Most of the attendees are usually prospective students, current her MBA students, as well as sponsors and some alumni.
The event will be held on November 11th and the theme will be “Leadership for Tomorrow”. The world has changed. Especially with the convergence of COVID and the new business models that have resulted from it. The purpose of this conference is to touch on how we can do our best in this new and evolving business environment.
