As the “Cheers” theme song says hauntingly, sometimes it’s tempting to go to a neighborhood bar or brewery where everyone knows your name.
Husband and wife Adam and Hannah Clark are sure to make a name for themselves at First Man Brewery (437 E. Madison Avenue). That’s because local residents recently set up the first of its kind in Derby, celebrating its grand opening on October 20th. 13.
The Clark family has always been Derby and actually met at St. Mary’s Catholic School when the school was located on what is now Madison Avenue Central Park (right across from First Man Brewery). Some of the seating installed on the west side of the brewery at its rim is a former school bench.
Besides the location being a perfect fit, the brewery was a natural evolution after Adam started home brewing in 2015 and invited friends and family to come and sample his creations weekly.
“The rally grew over time and the positive feedback cemented our belief that we could open a brewery,” Clarks said.
Tightening St. Mary’s and Clark’s ties to their Catholic roots, the name of the First Man Brewery is Riff of Adam and the Garden of Eden. Some beers are even named after saints.
Brewing in small batches gives the brewery the opportunity to experiment with versatile products, says Adam. First Man His brewery has the standard light, dark and hoppy beers, but Clarks also fosters a collaborative environment to keep the taps and ideas flowing.
“The staff at Firstman also contribute to the brewing process, so it’s always served fresh,” said Clarks. I have.”

With more than 15 years in the food industry together, the Clarks didn’t have long ownership of the brewery. In addition, many of the staff have taken over from their previous employers. While Adam was Master Brewer, Hannah, who also runs a professional photography company, oversaw many of the artistic and aesthetic aspects of the business.
Taking over the former Blue Dragon Books space, several major renovations have been made to make room for the brewing area, walk-in cooler, bar, kitchen and second bathroom, located on the east side of the building. A new patio has also been added.
Permits still don’t allow beer on the east side patio, but a temporary north side patio has been set up until the issue is resolved.
Along with beer (also available in to-go cans), First Man Brewery will serve food from the kitchen in the future, but the menu has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, the brewery hosts food trucks on the premises. As an artist, Clarks wants to host live music and showcase local art on her patio. The breweries are partnering at the Derby’s final Third Thursday event on October 20th.
Beginning October 19th, First Man Brewery will be open from 3-10pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3-11pm on Fridays, and noon-11pm on Saturdays. These times are subject to change depending on beer availability.
Originally from Derby, the Clarks have had a lot of local support in setting up First Man Brewery. We want to give back and strive to create a ‘convenient place to have a beer’ and a true family atmosphere.
“We have four children and it was important to us that everyone felt welcome here,” the Clarks said.
Adam and Hannah Clarke are shown with their children at the grand opening of First Man Brewery on Oct. 13. The couple said they strive to create a family-friendly environment in their business.
