Why 'Sleep Tourism' and 'Hang Science' are windows into our culture

Two terms new to me were in the weekend news. Each is a window into our cultural soul.

The first is “sleep tourism”. This is a trend because lack of sleep is a big problem for so many Americans. For example, hotels in New York City and London now have rooms with sleep-enhancing features and soundproofing. One hotel offers sleep-inducing meditation recordings, a pillow menu with options for guests who prefer to sleep on their side or back, weighted blankets, special bedtime teas, and scented pillow mist options. I’m here.

Not surprisingly, a recent study found that 40% of participants reported poor sleep quality since the start of the pandemic.

The second is “Hangsheity”. new york times Described as an “emotional plunge” [people] Feelings after drinking that don’t constitute a proper hangover. The article states that one of the effects of drinking alcohol is increased blood sugar levels and disturbed sleep due to excess glutamate.

In other words, we found that the second term makes the first term worse.

Amazon accused of selling suicide kits to teenagers

Human technology is advancing day by day, but human nature is not.

Russia appears to have retaliated by attacking a major Ukrainian city this morning after an explosion on a bridge connecting Russia and Crimea on Saturday. A series of blasts rocked Kyiv, with several attacks landing in the center of downtown the Ukrainian capital during rush hour.At least five people were killed and at least 12 injured, according to Kyiv police.

Ukrainian officials said a Russian missile strike hit an apartment building the day before. At least 13 people were killed and 87 injured.according to Associated Press, Ukrainian officials also claim that the Russian aggression against their country “is accompanied by the destruction and looting of historical sites and treasures on an industrial scale.” North Korea also launched two ballistic missiles yesterday.

Closer to home, lawsuits by parents accuse Amazon of selling suicide kits to teens. The lawsuit is being filed by family members of her two teenagers who purchased the deadly chemical on the company’s website and later used it to commit suicide. The mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is apologizing after being arrested Saturday night for driving drunk and causing an accident.

But another news story offers hope that we can claim today. Bargain He was a hunter at a property sale in Maine when he found a framed document with elaborate Latin script on sale for $75. He bought it and discovered it was used in Roman Catholic worship some 700 years ago and was worth as much as $10,000.

What Jews Never Did

The best advice I’ve ever received is one I’ve often shared. My high school youth minister said, “Always remember the source of your personal worth.” You are worth far more than what our secularized culture might have assigned you. In fact, your true worth is beyond all human estimates.

Recall familiar stories with surprising elements and find your own value.

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, Matthew reports: to him ”(3:16). This was the visual proof of Jesus’ vocation to be the Messiah (Isaiah 42:1), a position familiar to the Jews, the Savior they had prayed to for centuries.

“And behold, a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased'” (Matthew 3:17). God has a “son”! This was a radical idea for the Jews that focused on the uniqueness and singularity of God (cf. Deuteronomy 6:4).

If God has a Son, this Son must be as holy as the Father. And he was and still is.

The Jews considered God to be the “father” of the nation, but no one dared to claim God as their personal father. Not only did the Son of God often make this claim, but he called him “Abba”, the Aramaic word for “Papa” (cf. Mark 14:36).As the German theologian Joachim Jeremias pointed out jesus prayerthere is not a single instance of the use of ABBA . . as a call to God throughout Jewish literature. ”

No, it’s up to Jesus.

claim the truth about yourself

Here’s the gist: You can be a child of God because Jesus is the Son of God. (cf. 1 John 3:1; John 1:12; 2 Corinthians 6:18; Galatians 3:26). The moment you make Christ your Savior and Lord, you are “born again” into a new family, the family of God (John 3:3).

What does this mean practically?

You can love and serve people whether they love and serve you or not. Because this world is no longer your home and your inheritance with your eternal family is secure, you can pay any price in this world to glorify God (John 14:1-3). .

of The Life of a Beloved: Spiritual Life in a Secular World, Henri Nouwen explains this point better than me. Every time you feel hurt, offended, or rejected, you have to dare to tell yourself. The truth is, though I cannot feel it now, I am God’s chosen child, precious in His sight, called the Beloved of eternity, and kept safe in eternal faith. It means that there is

Do you remember the source of your personal worth today?
